The mission of Why Marriage Matters Alabama is to educate the people in Alabama regarding marriage for same-sex couples and marriage equality.
According to the 2010 census, there were 11,259 same-sex couples living in our state that year. Some of these couples have been legally married in other states, some have had commitment ceremonies in this state or elsewhere, and others are living in a meaningful partnership.
Regardless of their relationship status, all of these couples (and others) are missing out on 1,138 benefits, protections and responsibilities that opposite-sex couples easily attain.
Many of these couples would like to demonstrate their love and commitment in a public ceremony for their family and friends. They want to share the joys and sorrows that life together brings. And they want to be a family and to protect that family.
Why Marriage Matters Alabama will educate the people of Alabama on marriage equality.
Why Marriage Matters Alabama believes that everyone should be allowed the opportunity to marry the person they love.
Why Marriage Matters Alabama believes that marriage equality is inevitable in the United States and that in a matter of time Alabama will see marriage equality.
Why Marriage Matters Alabama will work to clear up misunderstandings about same-sex relationships.
Why Marriage Matters Alabama plans to partner with the national marriage equality group, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Alabama, and other groups that are fighting for marriage equality.
